Scottie's still with us ... barely

THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF 2010,
WHEN SCOTTIE COULD DO A PEE DANCE. OR EVEN WALK.

I've already mourned our collie Scottie, and he's still with us.

I knew this day was coming because of our last collie, Katie. She quit walking one day and never walked again. We kept her with us about six months too long, and she was in pain. Eventually, she was put to sleep in March of 2007.

Scottie's been having leg problems the last several months. He hasn't been able to climb stairs. When he went downstairs, he was too weak to get his hind legs through the dog door. He's had trouble lifting a leg to pee for awhile now. On Sunday, he had trouble lifting his hind legs a couple of inches to get into the house.

Now, it's worse. He hasn't eaten since Saturday and hasn't walked since Sunday. He did drink some water yesterday, but I couldn't coax him to eat a treat, and he turned down a meatball, one of his favorite things.

He looked up at me when I went into the kitchen earlier — he's lying on a mat near the basement door — and he tried but couldn't sit up. He's lying there with his eyes open now.

We'll take him to the vet today, and I'm afraid we won't bring him home. I mourned him last evening, and I suspect I'll do so for years to come.

P.P.S.: Scottie was put to sleep today (April 10). He was too weak and wasn't getting better.
