Dixie's little adventure

DIXIE AND ME
Dixie and I had a little adventure today. I had walked her this morning in our neighborhood, so I decided to take her up to Covington Park this afternoon.

I opened the back door of our car, and Dixie politely waited until I picked her up and put her on the floor behind the driver's seat. She didn't get up on the back seat; she stayed on the floor, a smart move.

I decided to go to the back area, near the softball field. We walked in the shade, then came back so I could sit on the bleachers and watch the kids practicing baseball.

One of the boys came to the fence and praised Dixie. I told him that her two goals in life are to get fed and to get petted. So he came around the fence and petted her. She then laid back, and he rubbed her belly and said she was a good-looking beagle.

He said they go to East Forsyth (Kernersville) Middle School.

Another boy came to the fence and wanted to pet her, but the team's activity bus came up the drive at that moment.

As we were walking to the car, a black SUV came up, and a man and two girls got out with softball equipment. We didn't stay to watch, and Dixie didn't get petted again today.

As soon as we got home, Dixie ran to her water bowl; then she found a spot to cool her belly.

We went again yesterday, but we had no luck with the natives. One guy just hurried into his car and drove off. A couple sat at one of the tables, but the man ignored Dixie and the woman said she wouldn't pet her; didn't want to make her own dog jealous.

(I think she was more concerned about touching a dog while she was eating.)

A bunch of cars went back to the softball field, but it was too hot by then; so we came home.

Calm under pressure

DIXIE AND ME GETTING CLOSE
I don't know if this is good or bad, but Dixie has one big advantage over our former mutt Lady.

When kids would run toward Lady, she'd back away from them. She probably felt like she was being attacked. I remember a boy trying to pet Lady at the dog park; she trotted away from him, and he ran after her; she'd look back to see if he was still coming (if he was, she'd speed up).

Our current dog, Dixie, is more calm when under siege. She just sits there waiting while kids run toward her to pet her. While Lady wasn't deliriously happy about being petted, Dixie craves the attention.

Is it good to just sit there when someone is running at you? Probably not. Still, it works. The kids get to pet her, and she gets petted.

Katie sometimes ran across the road so the kids over there could pet her; I never saw anyone try to pet Scottie (like Katie, a collie); and no one could pet Buddy (other than me, or Holly).

P.S.: I just looked through the photos on this blog (it just took seconds) and noticed that I don't have one photo of Lady being petted. I don't have any of Dixie yet, either; but I will get some.
