Quiet walk in the neighborhood

WE GOT CLOSE AT THE DOG PARK
Dixie and I had better luck walking today than we did yesterday.

I took her to Covington Park yesterday, but today we just walked around the neighborhood. It was uneventful, and Dixie seemed to enjoy our walk.

We walked up to our neighbors' yard, but they didn't pay any attention to us where they were working outside.

She never once tried to pull out of her harness. The only negative came when she tried to drink out of a mud puddle.

We just turned around and came back, picking up the mail on the way. I put Dixie in the house.

Then I went back out, put a bag of trash in the barrel and pulled it out to the curb (they'll pick it up Tuesday morning). Dixie's a major hindrance when taking out the trash, so it was best to leave her inside.

Dixie gave me a few moments of panic

DIXIE WIGGLED OUT OF THIS HARNESS
Dixie scared me again today, and it was my worst scare yet (at least with her).

I took her to Covington Park this morning to walk her and to put some cans and bottles in the recycle bin. I had just finished doing the latter when I realized that Dixie was more than 20 feet from me (and pulling away).

Then I looked down, and her harness was lying empty on the pavement and still connected to her leash.

I called her, of course, but she kept heading toward the road (I could see the worst-case scenario). She wasn't going to come to me, and I couldn't catch her. I was just calling my wife Holly when a man pulled up and got out with his dog.

I asked if he could help, since I don't walk well. He asked her name and if she had a collar, then took her leash. He began to call for her and walked toward her. She wouldn't come to me, but, naturally, she came right to him (I suspect the dog was a lure, and she'd want to get petted.).

She laid down, and he hooked her leash to her collar. We walked to each other, and she came right along. I thanked him profusely, then put her in the car (she jumped right in) and came home.

I have to admit there were two things I could have done that would have been better. I could have walked her first, put her back in the car, and then dumped the recyclables. Or I could have dumped the recyclables, then walked her.

I'll know better next time. Or I won't take her to the park when I'm heading to the recycle bin.
